This genetic change is called mutation (not the mutation that makes you a member of X-men!). As these unwanted cells continue to grow, they form a tumor. In time, the cells can migrate to other parts of the body. So, if cancer develops, a person may notice:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Patches on the lining of the mouth or tongue, usually red or red and white<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bleeding or pain<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mouth ulcers or sores that do not heal<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A lump or thickening of the gums or lining of the mouth<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Loose teeth with no apparent reason<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Swelling in the jaws<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unexplained, persistent numbness or an odd feeling on the lip or tongue\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A sore throat or feeling that something is stuck in the throat<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A hoarse voice<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Difficulty in chewing or swallowing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Difficulty moving the tongue or jaw<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Poorly fitting dentures (if anyone is wearing them)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Signs<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Signs are features of a disease which the dental practitioner can observe, feel or touch. So, signs which are commonly detectable by the dentist include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oral lichen planus: Areas having white lines with reddish border.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1902\" src=\"http:\/\/oralhfa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/image8.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"268\" height=\"179\" \/><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Leukoplakia: white patches that do not disappear upon rubbing.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1905\" src=\"http:\/\/oralhfa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/image11-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/oralhfa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/image11-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/oralhfa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/image11-450x299.jpg 450w, https:\/\/oralhfa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/image11.jpg 685w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3><b>Type of Mouth cancer<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oral cancer is categorized by the type of the cell the cancer starts to grow in.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It can either originate from connective tissue (sarcoma) or from epithelium (carcinoma).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most common type of oral cancer is squamous cell carcinoma which arises from the oral epithelium.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oral cancer, like anywhere in the body can be either benign or malignant. Benign tumour does not invade nearby tissues or spread to other parts of the body via metastasis. No cancer is considered good, but benign tumours are relatively considered very good, but can become serious if they press on vital structures like nerves or blood vessels.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the other hand, malignant tumour is a type of cancer which can invade and destroy nearby tissues and spread to other parts of the body via metastasis.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Metastasis can occur via:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Local invasion of tissues<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blood system<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lymphatic system<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1904 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/oralhfa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/image10.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"649\" height=\"340\" srcset=\"https:\/\/oralhfa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/image10.jpg 649w, https:\/\/oralhfa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/image10-300x157.jpg 300w, https:\/\/oralhfa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/image10-450x236.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 649px) 100vw, 649px\" \/>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>Treatment:<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0As any other disease in the textbook, cancer can also be treated, provided its \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 diagnosis is done early. Treatment of oral cancer will depend on the:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Location of cancer<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stage of cancer<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Type of cancer<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spread of cancer to other body parts<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The individual\u2019s overall health<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Personal preferences of patient<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A variety of options for treatment of oral cancer are available which include:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Surgery<\/strong><br \/>\n<\/span>To remove the cancerous cells or tumour. In some cases a tiny bit of surrounding normal tissue is also removed to ensure complete removal.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Radiation therapy<br \/>\n<\/strong>In this approach radiographic beams are directed at the cancerous cells to kill them.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Chemotherapy<br \/>\n<\/strong>In this approach strong medicines are used to kill cancerous cells.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These approaches are usually used in combination. For example, after surgery is done, radiotherapy may be used to prevent the cancerous cell to return.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The aim of the treatment to save the patient\u2019s life. On top of this, the patient\u2019s important functions of mouth like breathing, speaking, eating and appearance of mouth are prioritized while treating oral cancers.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Complications<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite successful treatments in many cases, many side effects or severe complications are likely to arise:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bleeding<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Infection<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pain<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Salivary gland problems<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Change in taste\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Difficulty eating and swallowing\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mental disturbance\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As they say &#8220;prevention is always better than cure&#8221; I&#8217;ll end this here on this note, hoping, just like me, you all will take the preventive measures too.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Prevention<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the famous saying goes that prevention is better than cure. Same is the case with oral cancer as well.
