As a pediatric dentist, there is a very popular question the parents of my little patients frequently ask me:\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

\u201c When should I start brushing my child\u2019s teeth? \u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

My answer is always:<\/b><\/p>\n

\u201cStart cleaning your baby\u2019s teeth even before they are visible in their mouth <\/span>\ud83d\ude0a<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The reason behind my answer is that the earlier you start brushing your child\u2019s teeth, the earlier your baby will get used to this daily routine.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Another yet puzzling question is, how to brush my child\u2019s teeth?<\/b> \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 I suggest using a soft damp washcloth that is wrapped around your finger to clean your baby\u2019s gums right after breast or bottle feeding and before sleeping.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When should I<\/b> shift to using a regular<\/b> toothbrush?\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

When the 1<\/span>st<\/span> tooth appears, usually it\u2019s the 2 middle bottom teeth (central incisors), they may switch to a small, child sized soft bristled toothbrush.<\/span><\/p>\n

Should I use toothpaste with the toothbrush?<\/b><\/p>\n

Ofcourse, it is crucial that toothpaste be used.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Furthermore, both the American Dental Association and American Academy of Pediatrics recommend using fluoride toothpaste for children the size of a grain of rice as soon as your baby\u2019s 1<\/span>st<\/span> tooth appears. You may then shift to using a pea-sized amount when your child turns 3 years old.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It is important that you double check that the toothpaste purchased is specific for children as they require a\u00a0 much lower concentration of fluoride than the adult\u2019s type, making it safer for usage by the little ones.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How often should I brush my child\u2019s teeth?<\/b><\/p>\n

The rule of thumb is 2×2.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This means twice per day, in the morning and before bed time, for 2 minutes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Spend proper time brushing the back teeth (molar teeth), as it is the area where cavities usually start to develop.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The point is, above all always make brushing teeth fun by setting a stop watch for 2 minutes and playing teeth brushing rhymes available on the internet or even your child\u2019s favourite song <\/span>\ud83d\ude0a<\/span><\/p>\n

Remember that children learn best by watching their elders, so you can always allow them to watch you while you are brushing your teeth.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Should I use dental floss for my child\u2019s teeth?<\/b><\/p>\n

Yes, you should start flossing your child\u2019s teeth once daily as soon as 2 teeth emerge\u00a0 and begin touching.<\/span><\/p>\n

You can use the floss stick rather than the regular one, as it may be easier as well as more comfortable for you and your child.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When should children begin to brush and floss on their own?<\/b><\/p>\n

Parents should brush and floss their children\u2019s teeth till the age of 6-7 years as children lack the coordination needed for brushing at such a young age. Thereafter, children may brush by themselves under parental supervision.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When should I get a new toothbrush for my child?<\/b><\/p>\n

Replace an old toothbrush every 3 months or sooner if it appears worn-out\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
