[11]

Are dentures worn 24 hours a day?

When you first receive your denture, your dentist will advise you to wear the denture for 24 hours. This may be uncomfortable as you will have to wear your denture even while sleeping but it is to identify areas of adjustment that may be needed. Once the denture is properly fitted to your requirements and satisfaction, you should remove your denture at night before sleeping. It is not recommended to wear your dentures for longer periods in a single day to prevent the incidence of dental stomatitis.

How long do dentures last?

In most cases dentures will last five to eight years, but with proper care. Over this time, dentures get worn out due to regular use, and your gums may change shape or shrink over the years. If you clean and care for your dentures properly, you won’t have to worry about getting new dentures for at least several years. But in some cases, where there is significant wear, fractures or deterioration of dentures, new dentures maybe indicated. Of course, it may be acceptable to repair or relines the dentures, rather than remake them. Therefore, it is important to get your mouth and dentures evaluated by your dentist or prosthodontist annually. Your dentist or prosthodontist could advise you regarding the best option.
