You Are What You Eat
It is said: ” You are what you eat “, and the same goes for your teeth too! And when it comes to sugars, it’s not only you who’s fed but the bacteria in your mouth too, and that causes tooth decay.
If we are cautious regarding our diet, then we should be two or three times as cautious with our little ones’ diet! What then should you watch out for and what to encourage them to chew on for healthier teeth and gums and less teeth related ache and trouble?
What to watch out for:
- The number 1 bad guys are sticky candies and sweets, such as lollipops, caramel, and nougats. Since they tend to stick to the teeth and are removed with rather difficulty.
And what about chocolates?
According to the American Dental Association ADA, chocolates are easier to be washed out from teeth than other types of candies, especially dark chocolate (70% cocoa or more) which has some health benefits. So as per stated in some studies chocolate is not as bad as other sugary candies and treats.
- Number 2 on the list is the retentive starchy food that tend to stick in between teeth, this includes potato chips, and soft breads.
- Carbonated and fizzy drinks:
They not only contain huge amounts of sugar but also contain acids that can wear away the outer layer of teeth thereby weakening them and making them more liable to decay and sensitivity.
What are healthy alternatives for kids to chew on?
- Fresh vegetables which are rich in fibers, such as carrots and cucumbers as they act as natural cleansers for teeth and gums. According to the ADA they also stimulate the flow of saliva in the mouth which naturally contains traces of minerals, most importantly calcium and phosphorus, that help restore the effect of acids produced by bacteria on the teeth. So, a snack of fresh vegetables sticks can be counted as a natural defender for teeth and gums.
- Dairy products such as milk, plain yogurt and cheese naturally contain calcium that helps rebuild the outer layer of teeth that might have been affected previously by eating other sugary food. Cheese is also considered as a second saliva maker!
- Sugar free chewing gum also has a dual function as a great saliva maker in addition to the cleansing action by removing food particles that might have been stuck in between the teeth
- Thumbs up for plain popcorn as well as oven baked potatoes to be considered as amazing alternatives for the potato chips and other unhealthy snacks.
